The Miners’ Hymns premiered to sell-out audiences and critical acclaim at Durham Cathedral in July 2010. An elegy to the former coal mining communities of North East England, the piece has a wider and timely resonance in highlighting the scale and the continuing social and cultural legacies of the economic changes of recent decades. Our recent histories of everyday life, work, community and culture are increasingly unfamiliar and invisible in our “post-industrial” age.
The performance - a film by Bill Morrison collaged from archival footage accompanied by an original live score for brass by Jóhann Jóhannsson - will tour in 2011. The film itself will also be screened at various film festivals and cinemas, and will be released on DVD in 2011
